Ecology: Tourists Are Becoming Increasingly Conscious of the Environment

Sustainable Tourism

If a growing number of tourists are becoming ecology conscious, what are the implications for the travel industry in Asia, where economic development has long been seen as more important that environmental protection?

The Americans have long been seen as global trendsetters, and an increasing number of American tourists are basing their travel decisions on environmental issues.

According to a survey by TripAdvisor, 57% of American tourists often make their travel decisions based on environmental concerns.

An even larger number – 71% – say they will make more green friendly travel choices in the year to come. Other nationalities were not mentioned in the report, but it would seem likely that similar sentiments would be expressed by travelers from other countries, as well.

So what are the implications for the travel industry in the Asia Pacific?

Sustainable Tourism Conference Planned

The Asia Pacific Tourism Destination Investment Conference (APTDI) 2013 will be held from 21 to 23 October 2013 in Singapore.

The sustainable tourism conference will bring together more than 500 top level executives from both the public and private sectors to brainstorm how the travel industry can be made more sustainable.

Dr Michael Frenzel, Chairman, TUI Deutschland GmbH & Chairman, World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), will give the keynote presentation on diversity and sustainability for future tourism development.

There will also be a panel discussion on infrastructure and business models for sustainable development of destination resorts.

Best Practices in Master Planning

“This conference will explore and discuss the best practices in master planning for upcoming tourism destinations,” a press release issued by Questex Hospitality + Travel says.

“Up to 10 investment-ready major development projects will be featured as the conference explores how better policy framework, public-private partnerships and innovative business models can unleash investment potential in Asia.”

Sustainble tourism is a concept whose time has come. Governments and travel providers that ignore the trend toward eco-friendly travel do so at their peril.
