G Hotel Singapore is a four-star property in Bras Basar Bugis, Singapore’s trendy arts culture district. Rooms are small, but they are comfortable – and the hotel has a great vibe.
I could feel the vibe the moment I walked into the lobby. “This is where I want to stay tonight,” I thought as I approached the front desk and was greeted with warm smiles.
So what had attracted me to Hotel G Singapore in the first place?
As I prowled Bras Basar Bugis in search of a spot to spend one night, I was noticed a hotel with a stylish, avant-garde facade.
There were only two questions. First of all, would there be any vacancies? I was in Singapore during peak season, and many hotels were fully booked?
The second question was, if there are any rooms, how much would they cost? I was on a budget, and I didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg.
I also had a tight schedule and wouldn’t be spending much time at the hotel, so I wasn’t too concerned about incidentals such as a swimming pool or a fitness room.
I walked into the hotel’s lobby and asked the price. Inquiring about discounts, I was told that discounts couldn’t be offered at the front desk.
Returning to the Mercure Singapore Bugis, where I was being hosted for one night, I went on line and discovered that I could get a better deal booking a room through Hotels.com than I would get booking a room at the front desk.
So I booked a room, packed my things, and returned to the hotel a couple of hours later.
Based on on-line reviews, the hotel scores well on all counts, with hotel guest giving it 8.2 points out of 10 for cleanliness, 8.1 points for location, 8 points for service, 7.8 points for rooms and dining, and 7.1 points for facilities.
Many of the comments mention the small size of the hotel’s rooms, but the smart decor, convenient layout, and very comfortable beds are mitigating factors.
Accommodation
There are no two ways about it. The  15 to 16 square metre room I stayed in was cramped. But  it was suitable for one person spending just one night.
It would also have been suitable for a longer stay assuming I was only going to sleep in the room and would be spending most of time time either attending meetings on business or exploring the city as a leisure traveler.
Since I DO tend to spend a lot of time in hotel rooms working on my blog, however, it would probably not have been suitable for a longer stay.
Larger rooms measure 27 square metres and would be suitable for two hotel guests.
The room had some interesting features. Instead of having electric hot water kettles inside each room, there were thermoses.
Dispensers for not and cold water as well as ice were located down the hall.
I liked the décor, especially the sturdy solid wooden doors, the exposed concrete on one wall, the quirky light fixture dangling from the ceiling, and the bulletin board on one wall with pinned notices.
It gave the room a pleasant college dorm feel.
I particularly liked the amenities. I liked the Metis recovery body bar so much, in fact, that I asked a hotel maid if I could have a couple of extra bars to take home.
The lavender, bergamot, and geranium scent was intoxicating. The almond oil and olive stones exfoliates the skin, the packaging says.
There was a 32-inch IPTV and complimentary wi-fi with a smart phone offering free local and international phone calls to 10 global destinations.
As at most of the other hotels I stayed at during this trip to Singapore, the phone could be taken out of the room.
The room had universal electrical outlets so adapters weren’t needed.
While the room had a window, there wasn’t much of a view. And to get to it, I would have had to climb over the bed.
Food and Beverage
The hotel has two food and beverage outlets, one of which was not yet open for business during my stay.
With an open-air frontage onto Middle Road, Ginett Wine Bar and Restaurant has an undeniable vibe.
When I was on my way out of the hotel to meet friends in another part of the city, I exited through the eatery, and it seemed to be filling up quickly with a very attractive crowd.
Could it have been because it was Ladies Night, and groups of four female were entitled to a free bottle of wine?
The eatery is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
25 Degrees is a burger and liquor bar named after the temperature halfway between a raw and well-done hamburger.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to eat at either of the food and beverage outlets during my short stay.
I had a dinner appointment in another part of town. By the time I got back to the hotel, it was straight to bed.
The hotel also has a fitness centre, which I also didn’t have time to check out during my short stay, either.
Location, Location, Location
The hotel is located in the heart of Bugis, Singapore’s vibrant arts and cultural district. A Christian church, a Hindu temple, and a Chinese temple are located within a short walk of the hotel.
The hotel is situated in Bras Basah Bugis, a colourful and historic part of town with shopping malls, several heritage sites, and lots of restaurants and pubs.
The hotel opens onto Middle Road near Orchard Road, one of Singapore’s most important arteries.
The hotel is located a few minutes’ walk from the Bugis and Dhoby Ghaut MT stations.
