Hertz Upgrades Vehicle Cleaning

The largest car rental agency in the United States Hertz upgrades its vehicle cleaning and sanitation regimen as demand for rental cars stagnates because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hertz Gold Standard Clean debuts in the U.S. Worldwide implementation will follow.

Airlines, hotels, and restaurants are not the only sectors in the travel industry to take a major hit because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rental car business is also in the doldrums. For example, U.S. rental car stalwarts Hertz and Avis have both been hit hard. In fact, Hertz might even be on the verge of filing for bankruptcy.

“In light of the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic on the travel industry, Hertz believes it will not need to acquire new vehicles for its fleet through the remainder of 2020,” the car rental company told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Hertz Upgrades Vehicle Cleaning with Gold Standard

As demand for rental cars stagnates, Hertz is taking advantage of the lull to upgrade its vehicle cleaning and sanitation regimen.

Under the Hertz Gold Standard Clean initiative, all vehicles undergo a 15-point cleaning and sanitation process. In fact, the process follows U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

This process includes cleaning and sanitizing both the exterior and interior of vehicles.

For example, interiors and trunks are vacuumed. And sanitation crews disinfect key contact areas using a disinfectant approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use against the coronavirus.

After workers complete the process, vehicles are sealed and certified.

“Sealing each vehicle is a first-of-its-kind practice in the car rental industry and one we believe will give customers added peace of mind knowing they are the only person to enter the vehicle after it’s been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized,” says Kathryn V. Marinello, Hertz President and CEO.

Hertz is debuting the new process at all of its locations across the United States. It will extend the process to other countries in the future.

Disinfecting Rental Locations

Not only is Hertz upgrading the cleaning and sanitation of its vehicles. In fact, the car rental agency is also enhancing protocols at its rental locations.

For example, staff regularly wipe down high-touch areas such as counters, door handles, kiosks, and other hard surfaces with an approved disinfectant.  And they also regularly disinfect shuttles.

In addition, employees follow social distancing guidelines and best practices. And the company reinforces these guidelines with signage at all locations.

Because many rental car users want to reduce interpersonal contact, Hertz is offering various low contact rental solutions. In fact, some solutions are completely touchless.

For example, at many airports, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards members can skip the counter and go straight to their car.

And at locations where Hertz Fast Lane powered by CLEAR is available, members can also exit the lot with a quick facial scan. Consequently, they can enjoy a completely touchless experience.

When they are ready to return their vehicle, members can drop it off thanks to Hertz’s eReceipt and Express Return service.

Hertz Neighborhood  Delivery

Finally, Hertz has launched Hertz Neighborhood Delivery at close to 3,000 neighborhoods in the United States.

Under this protocol, customers can pick up their rental vehicle at their preferred location. And they can drop it off at their preferred location.

“We’ve always provided a variety of rental solutions and service offerings to meet our customer’s individual preferences and that focus continues,” says Marinello.

“As customers begin making travel plans or have other transportation needs, we want them to have total confidence that we’ve taken the right steps to protect their safety and will continue providing the caring and personalized service they know and expect from Hertz.”
