Hong Kong: Art Gallery Week to Showcase City’s Emergence as an Artistic and Cultural Hub

Arts and Culture

Hong Kong Art Gallery 2014 opens 26 November for a 10 day run. Exhibitions, performances, talks, tours, workshops, and other events will take place throughout the city, with about 50 galleries taking part.

Now in its second year, Hong Kong Art Gallery Week will launch on 26 November 2014. It will run through 5 December.

Hong Kong was long thought of as a ‘cultural desert’. Does that description still apply?

Reflecting Hong Kong’s growing importance as a regional and a global arts and cultural hub, Hong Kong Art Gallery Week’s programme will feature more than 100 events including 40 free events open to the public. There will also be more than 12 new exhibition openings.

Hong Kong Art Gallery Week is aimed at promoting local artists and arts organisations. Events will take place in such diverse neighborhoods as Central, Chai Wan, Sai Ying Pun, Sheung Wan, and South Island. Can this help to engender a ‘gallery going culture’ in Hong Kong?

Some of the events will take place at high profile galleries along Hollywood Road. Others will be held a unpretentious little galleries tucked away on alleyways off the beaten track.

Fast Growing Cultural Hub

“Hong Kong is one of the world’s fastest-growing cultural hubs and the leading art sales hub in Asia,” says Adriana Alvarez-Nichol, Head of the Hong Kong Art Gallery Week Committee and Vice-President of the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association.

“HKAGA was founded with the aim of developing new connections and relationships within Hong Kong’s vibrant arts sector. Last year, the festival brought over 6,000 art professionals, collectors, university students, and the general public together. For the second edition, we want to cement the week as a highlight of the art calendar in Hong Kong and across the region. There will be an enhanced focuson arts education and discovery, developing younger audiences and investing in the next generation of arts practitioners and gallerists.”

Hong Kong Art Gallery Week is organised by the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Private Banking. It is supported by the Arts Development Council.
