The Back Story

I had walked past La Vache! many times, always thinking “one of these days,” but I had never been hungry enough to do the place justice.

On this particular occasion, I had spent a week at home following a relatively minor medical procedure, which had prevented me from venturing outdoors.

I had been to the doctor’s office in the office tower overhead and was in the mood to celebrate my re-entry into normalcy. More importantly, I had a ravenous appetite. I decided that “one of these days” had come!

La Vache! Hong Kong – the Menu

La Vache! offers a Fixed Price Menu that’s refreshingly straightforward: one set meal, no decisions required.

For a single price, you get a classic French bistro experience built around the Parisian entrecôte frites tradition. That’s French for steak and French fries. Bon appétit!

You start with a crisp green salad, which includes walnuts, some paper-thin slices of radish, and a tangy mustard vinaigrette.

I loved the salad dressing, but when I asked what kind of dressing it was, the waitress replied that she didn’t know.

That came as a bit of a surprise. It was early, and the place wasn’t busy – yet, at least. So why didn’t she offer to find out? Oh, well. C’est la vie!

If I remember correctly, the unlimited frites arrived next.

The thin-cut, golden French fries (frites, in French) were served piping hot, and they continued to be “topped up” throughout my dinner – the way coffee is topped up at a coffee shop in the United States.

I finally had to tell them that I had had enough! J’en ai assez!

A generous portion of entrecôte—a richly marbled USDA Prime Ribeye Steak—came next. It was grilled to your preference, and my preference was rare.

It came sliced and served pre-cut on a platter with La Vache’s secret sauce.

The steak was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was absolutely amazing. Délicieux!

La Vache! Hong Kong – the Beverages

La Vache! has a carefully curated wine lists featuring red, white, sparkling, and rose vintages as well as cocktails, zero proof wines, aperitifs, and freshly squeezed juices.

I learned many years ago that a good restaurant will never serve an inferior wine as its house wine (and the worst value is usually the second least expensive of the list), so I trusted the house wine, especially considering that there was only one entre on the menu.

In other words, it had surely been carefully selected to go well with the wine. As it turned out, I was right.

The wine paired beautifully with the steak—its smooth structure and balanced acidity cut through the richness of the entrecôte and complemented the savory depth of the sauce.

It was clearly chosen with the dish in mind, and it delivered.

All I can say is, the wine was outstanding, and I ordered a second glass. C’était parfait!

La Vache! Hong Kong – the Desserts

After the main course, I was tempted with a display of classic French desserts, but I resisted temptation.

I was stuffed to the gills following that delightful salad, mouthwatering steak, and endless flow of French fries!

I assume that the desserts may vary, but here are some examples of what you might expect:

  • Tarte Tatin – caramelized upside-down apple tart.
  • Millefeuille – layers of flaky pastry with cream and caramel.
  • Profiteroles – choux pastry filled with vanilla cream, topped with chocolate.
  • Paris-Brest – hazelnut cream-filled pastry shaped like a wheel.

Next time, I’ll save room. La prochaine fois, je laisserai de la place!
