A massive turnout is expected at tomorrow night’s candlelight vigil to commemorate the victims of the June 4th massacre in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park. Will the weather cooperate?
Multiples of 5 always draw bigger turnouts than usual at June 4th memorials, and when it’s 5 times 5 you can expect the turnout to be bigger still.
At least that is the hope of organizers of the candlelight vigil to be held tomorrow night in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island.
Several years back, the crowds started growing smaller and older each year as memories faded and many of those that remembered the massacre started dying off.
But there was a big upsurge 5 years ago on the 20th anniversary of the massacre as the post-1989 generation started showing up in increasing numbers.
Did social media have anything to do with it? Or was it parents and teachers that helped keep the memory alive?
There has also been an upsurge in attendance by mainland Chinese, who travel to Hong Kong just to attend the event.
150,000 people attended last year’s vigil – despite torrential rain. Organizers predict that at least as many people with attend this year’s event.

Candlelight Vigil for the 25 Anniversary of June 4 held on Wednesday 4 June 2014 on the 6 football fields in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island. The ceremony will commence at 8 pm.
