Home to Cape Verde’s only active volcano, Fogo attracts hikers, nature lovers, wine enthusiasts, and travelers seeking the road less traveled. Nearly all of the hotels in Fogo are located in either São Filipe, the island’s capital, or Chã das Caldeiras, which is within the caldera of Pico do Fogo. This guide explores the advantages of each and whether you should stay in town, near the volcano, or split your time between both.

Welcome to Fogo – the Volcanic Island

Dominated by Pico do Fogo, Cape Verde’s highest peak and only active volcano, Fogo is one of the archipelago’s most distinctive islands.
The volcano’s fertile slopes support vineyards, coffee plantations, and small farms, creating landscapes unlike those found elsewhere in Cape Verde.
Most visitors arrive through São Filipe, the island’s capital and largest town. Known for its colorful colonial architecture, black-sand beaches, and dramatic cliff-top setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, São Filipe serves as the island’s cultural and commercial center.
This is also where most of the island’s places to eat and stay are located. For dining recommendations, see my Foodie’s Guide to the Best Tables on Fogo
Fogo’s most famous attraction is Chã das Caldeiras, a community located within the vast caldera of Pico do Fogo.
Despite being affected by volcanic eruptions over the years, the area remains an important destination for hiking, wine production, and experiencing the island’s rugged volcanic scenery.
On Fogo’s northeastern coast, Mosteiros is known for its coffee plantations and agricultural heritage. Together with the vineyards of Chã das Caldeiras, it highlights the remarkable fertility of the island’s volcanic soil.
Whether you’re interested in hiking, wine tasting, coffee culture, photography, or simply experiencing a different side of Cape Verde, Fogo offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and tradition.
Where to Stay in Fogo

Best Time to Visit Fogo
Fogo enjoys warm temperatures year-round, but conditions vary more than on some of Cape Verde’s flatter islands.
While São Filipe has a warm, dry coastal climate, higher elevations around Chã das Caldeiras are noticeably cooler, especially in the evenings.
The driest months generally run from November to July, making this the best period for hiking, sightseeing, and exploring the island’s volcanic landscapes. Conditions are usually clearest from December to April, which is also one of the most popular times to visit.
Match or April can be an especially rewarding time to visit Fogo if you’re a coffee lover because this is when the coffee is harvested, and the Fogo Coffee Festival takes place in the town of Mosteiros.
There are tastings, cultural performances, exhibitions, and other events. Check in advance when it will take place, as the exact timing of the festival varies.
The island’s traditional Bandeira de São Filipe celebrations and the Festa de São Filipe also take place around this time, bringing horse races, music, dancing, and parades to the island. During festival periods, accommodations can be harder to find and room rates may increase.
July and August coincide with the grape harvest in Chã das Caldeiras, when vineyards within the caldera are at their most active. Wine enthusiasts may wish to plan their visit around this period.
Wine-related celebrations and events are sometimes held in conjunction with the harvest, so it is worth checking local schedules before you travel.
August to October is the warmest and most humid period of the year and also the most likely to experience rainfall.
While Fogo receives more rain than many of Cape Verde’s other islands, precipitation remains unpredictable. Rain can make hiking trails muddy and occasionally affect road conditions in the caldera.
For most travelers, November through April offers the best combination of pleasant weather, comfortable hiking conditions, and reliable access to the island’s attractions.
April is particularly appealing if you would like to combine volcanoes, coffee culture, and some of Fogo’s most important annual celebrations.
