Praia
Praia is Santiago’s capital, its largest city, and the island’s cultural center.
Located on the island’s Southern coast, Praia has excellent beaches, historic landmarks, and several institutions that reflect Cape Verde’s Portuguese, African, and Creole heritage.
This is where most hotels in Santiago Island are located, and it is where most travelers to the island choose to stay.
Importantly, Praia is close to Nelson Mandela International Airport (a.k.a. Praia Airport), Cape Verde’s second‑busiest airport and the country’s main domestic and regional hub.

Tarrafal
Tarrafal is a seaside town on Santiago’s northern tip, known for its sheltered bay, calm waters, and relaxed beach atmosphere.
Tarrafal has a small cluster of beachfront hotels, guesthouses, and aparthotels, making it a popular base for travelers who want easy access to water sports and other outdoor activities.
Attractions include Tarrafal Beach, Tarrafal Camp, Monte Contador, and Serra da Malagueta Nature Park.
Tarrafal is where you can engage in jet skiing, diving, water-biking, sport fishing, traditional fishing, snorkeling, banana boat riding, paddle boarding and other water sports.
Tarrafal is nearly 45 miles, or 70 kilometers, from the Praia Airport. The drive takes from an hour to 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

Best Times to Visit Santiago
Santiago has warm weather year‑round, with only small seasonal shifts. The island’s busiest periods are December to February and August, when holiday travel and school breaks bring more visitors. Outside these months, Santiago feels more relaxed, and hotel rates often drop.
Wind is strongest from January to March. These breezy months bring cooler temperatures and clear visibility, making them excellent for hiking across Santiago’s mountains, valleys, and rural trails.
August to October brings higher humidity and occasional rough seas, which can affect beach days and limit boat excursions, especially around Praia and Tarrafal.
If you prefer calm conditions and fewer crowds, March to June and September to November are usually the best times to visit. These shoulder months offer steady weather, comfortable hiking conditions, and more availability at hotels.
