The Back Story

Shortly after I returned to Hong Kong from an extended stay in Thailand, an old foodie buddy got in touch asking if I would like to join him for dinner at a Japanese seafood restaurant in the Tsim Sha Tsui district of the Kowloon Peninsula.
If you have never been to Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui is popular with locals and tourists alike owing to its diverse dining scene, numerous cultural venues, and wide range of shopping malls and specialty shops. It is also home to the world-famous Star Ferry Terminal!
Of course, I said yes! Owing to COVID, we had almost lost touch. So it would be good to enjoy a meal together and catch up. It was just like old times!
Overview – Kuromon Aquatic Japanese Restaurant

Kuromon Aquatic Japanese Restaurant is reminiscent of the countless Japanese-style izakaya, or dine-in sake shops, which dot the side streets and back alleys of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and other Japanese cities.
Whether you’re a local Japanese food fan or a traveling foodie in search of a unique dining experience, you’ve come to the right place.
This hidden gem in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui is more than the typical Japanese seafood restaurants that are found all over Hong Kong.
In fact, Kuromon Aquatic is a feast for the senses – both your eyes and your taste buds. Artistically plated, the fresh seafood and other Japanese dishes come together in perfect harmony to create a memorable meal.
Whether you’re a sushi lover, a fan of sashimi, or simply curious to try something new, Kuromon Aquatic Japanese Restaurant is a must-visit destination.
So, look over my shoulder as I reminisce about this culinary journey and discover the delights that await you at this extraordinary Japanese seafood eatery.

The Menu – Kuromon Aquatic Japanese Restaurant

As the restaurant’s name suggests, the menu at Kuromon Aquatic Japanese Restaurant focuses on fresh seafood such as sushi and sashimi.
But other Japanese favorites such as sukiyaki, skewers. street food, and seasonal dishes are featured. As for the ingredients, many of them are imported direct from Japan!
Our Dinner

We were served a mouth-watering multi-course dinner that was fit for an emperor! Here are the highlights:

Our dinner began with a surprise appetizer from the chef!

The scallops with caviar came next.

The sashimi salad was light and flavorful. I couldn’t get enough!

I loved the tangy tangerine hints that added nuance to the thinly sliced and beautifully plated sea bream.

Another beautifully plated dish, the grilled miso paste was served with saltine crackers. What a pleasant surprise!

The grilled eel Japanese egg rolls ware absolutely delicious.
Recommended Dish

I’m more of a meat-eater than a seafood lover. So it came as no surprise that my favorite dish was the sukiyaki.
If you’re not familiar with Japanese cuisine, sukiyaki is a popular Japanese dish featuring thin slices of marbled beef, tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables in a sweetened soy sauce.
The sukiyaki was served hotpot style. In other words, the sauce simmered in a hot pot on the table, and we tossed the other ingredients into it and let them simmer until they were ready to eat.
And it was absolutely delicious!! If I could choose only one dish at the popular Japanese style eatery, the sukiyaki would be it!
The Ambiance – Kuromon Aquatic Japanese Restaurant

Kuromon Aquatic Japanese Restaurant is an informal Japanese restaurant featuring a blond wooden interior typical of a family-run izakaya, or dine-in sake shop, in Japan.
There were round paper lanterns suspended from the ceiling, traditional wooden cooking ;utensils, and colorful posters.
