 The Back Story

Welcome to Swatow Eatery Bangkok, where the flavors of Hong Kong meet the bustling streets of the Big Mango!
If you’re a intrepid traveler or a committed foodie looking for an authentic taste of Hong Kong-style Cantonese cuisine in the heart of the Big Mango, you’re in for a culinary treat!
I discovered Swatow Eatery quite by accident. In fact, it was tucked away in a corner of the dimly lit second floor of a parking lot above the Foodland supermarket on Sukhumvit Soi 16 in the Asoke section of Bangkok, Thailand.
I have to be honest, Swatow Eatery looked a bit worse for wear. and the fact there were few diners wasn’t a good sign. But I was curious nonetheless.Â
I wandered over to peruse the menu. The selection of dishes looked promising. When I looked inside, I saw the roasted meats hanging inside the kitchen – just like in Hong Kong! So I decided to give the place a try.
BTW, the restaurant was a very short walk from the Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel, where I was a long-staying guest.
Restaurant Overview – Swatow Eatery Bangkok

Serving Hong Kong-style Cantonese cuisine, Swatow Eatery was just a short walk from my hotel, Jono Bangkok Asok Holel, a trendy budget hotel targeting digital nomads.
Because I spent several months staying at the hotel, I had the opportunity to dine at Swatow Eatery many, many times.
BTW, the restaurant is named after Shantou. a coastal city in Southern China, which is 179 miles (288 kilometers) from Hong Kong.
Swatow is the way the city’s name was Romanized into English before the widespread adoption of the pinyin romanization system. Swatow approximates how the name would be pronounced in the local dialect.
Recommended Dishes – Swatow Eatery Bangkok
Swatow Eatery Bangkok has an extensive menu ranging from pricey gourmet seafood dishes to dim sum, congee, fried rice, roast meats, noodles in soup, rice plates. and main courses. Keep reading for a few of my favorites.

Swatow Eatery has a limited choice of Hong Kong-style dim sum, including two of my favorites, Crystal Prawn Dumplings and :Prawn and Pork Dumplings.
There wasn’t enough choice to justify a dim sum brunch. But I typically ordered one or two of them to accompany a main course when dining alone.

I’ve never been much of a fan of congee, but the version served at Swatow Eatery was enough to make a convert out of me.
In fact, I only sampled it when I was temporarily subjected to a bland diet. And I ended up eating it for lunch almost every day.
There are several standard selections, and they can be paired with a variety of add-ons at a modest charge. So I would order the pork congee with chicken or the chicken congee with pork.
And I must say, the congee was absolutely delicious! Now I realized why so many of my Chinese friends like it so much.
BTW, if you don’t know what congee is, it is a kind of rice porridge made by boiling rice in a liberal amount of water until the rice becomes soft. It is usually served with side dishes.

The Yangzhou Fried Rice at Swatow Eatery in Bangkok had barbecue pork (known as char siu in Hong Kong), chicken, and shrimp as well as scrambled egg and vegetables. It was hearty and delicious!

The Chicken and Sweet Peppers exceeded my expectations. Why? There were fermented black beans, adding an appealing zestiness to the sauce. As usual, I paired it with shrimp dumplings.
  Â
I’ve had a life-long lover affair with sweet and sour pork. In my opinion, it is one of the 10 best dishes ever invented. And it is definitely my favorite Chinese dish. But not all restaurants do it well.
I am happy to report that the Sweet and Sour Pork at Swatow Eatery did not disappoint!
Chock full of chunks of pineapple and bell peppers, it had the perfect balance of sweet and sour. The sauce was thick and gooey. The pork was meaty and plentiful. And the batter had the right amount of crunch.
Most important, there no bones!
The Ambiance

Swatow Eatery Bangkok has a no-frills dining room with tables as well as booths lining the walls. There is a glass-fronted kitchen at the rear, with barbecue meats hanging behind the windows in typical Hong Kong fashion.
The Verdict
Â
You go to Swatow Eatery Bangkok for the food not the ambiance. But the menu is extensive, and the food I sampled was authentic and delicious.
Unfortunately, the kitchen closes at 7 pm, so you have to dine early .I give Swatow Eatery Bangkok an enthusiastic thumbs up!
