Lufthansa First Class Dining— What to Expect

For many travelers, First Class is about more than a spacious seat and attentive service. Dining has become an increasingly important part of the premium travel experience, with leading airlines investing in chef partnerships, curated wine programs, and personalized service. So what can you expect if you book a first class ticket on Lufthansa German Airlines?

Lufthansa German Airlines has been investing heavily in its First Class product.

For many passengers, the experience begins on the ground through dedicated First Class lounges and terminals designed to provide a seamless transition from the airport to the aircraft.

In the air, the airline’s new Allegris First Class suites offer a more modern cabin design and enhanced privacy. Lufthansa has also introduced a range of service enhancements aimed at elevating the overall passenger experience from departure to arrival.

Dining forms an important part of that strategy. From caviar service and prestige champagne to chef-designed tasting menus, Lufthansa has introduced a new culinary concept designed to complement its premium offering.

The Dining Concept

Lufthansa’s current First Class dining experience is built around a modern fine-dining philosophy.

The concept was developed in partnership with two-Michelin-starred chef Christoph Kunz and catering specialist gategourmet, a Swiss-based airline catergin company.

Rather than focusing on a traditional airline meal service, the program emphasizes choice, presentation, and personalization.

The concept allows passengers to structure their meals according to their own preferences, creating a dining experience that feels closer to a restaurant than a conventional airline service.

Aviation writer Ben Schlappig of One Mile at a Time describes Lufthansa’s broader FOX (Future Onboard Experience) initiative as a meaningful enhancement of the airline’s soft product, noting that the carrier is placing greater emphasis on the overall passenger experience.

“The changes are absolutely noticeable, and make a difference,” Ben says.

The Menu Structure

While menus vary by season, route, and departure city, Lufthansa’s First Class service typically follows a multi-course format.

Flights departing Germany feature tasting-style elements that may include amuse-bouche selections, appetizers, main courses, and desserts presented as a sequence of smaller courses. Passengers may choose a traditional entrée or combine multiple dishes in tasting-sized portions.

This approach allows travelers to sample a broader range of dishes than would be possible with a conventional single-course selection.

Writing about Lufthansa’s dining overhaul, Daniel Ross of Upgraded Points noted that the airline’s tasting-menu approach is more commonly associated with fine-dining restaurants than traditional airline catering.

“Chef Christoph Kunz … has curated a menu you might associate more with a fine dining restaurant,” he says.

“Passengers can even opt to savor the delights of a tasting menu rather than a regular old main course.”

Signature Caviar Service

One of the best-known elements of Lufthansa First Class dining is its signature caviar service.

The presentation traditionally includes caviar accompanied by blini, chopped egg, shallots, lemon, and crème fraîche. Lufthansa also offers passengers the option of enjoying caviar as part of breakfast service on selected flights.

The service remains one of the defining features of the First Class experience and is intended to provide a sense of occasion during the flight.

According to Daniel Ross of Upgraded Points, Lufthansa recently enhanced the presentation of its caviar service with additional serving elements, reinforcing its status as one of the airline’s signature onboard traditions.

“Lufthansa has also added some bells and whistles to its caviar service, namely, blinis and a mother-of-pearl spoon.” Daniel says.

“And to wash it all down, the German flag carrier is introducing Prestige cuvée La Grande Dame by Veuve Clicquot. ”

Champagne and Wine Program

The beverage program plays a significant role in Lufthansa’s First Class offering.

The airline serves La Grande Dame by Veuve Clicquot as its flagship champagne. Produced only in selected vintages, La Grande Dame is Veuve Clicquot’s prestige cuvée and is considered one of the Champagne house’s most celebrated wines.

“The palate is energetic and creamy, with brisk acidity keeping everything in balance,” says wine critic Anna-Christina Cabrales.

“A subtle chalky finish provides refined depth. Seamless and effortless, it’s one that will disappear quickly in the glass.”

In addition to its champagne program, Lufthansa regularly refreshes its wine selection through a panel that includes Masters of Wine, holders of the wine industry’s highest professional qualification.

The wines are selected to complement the onboard menu and give frequent travelers an opportunity to experience different labels throughout the year.

In addition to wine and champagne, passengers can choose from a range of premium spirits, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages.

Dining on Your Own Schedule

One of the most notable aspects of Lufthansa’s First Class dining experience is the emphasis on flexibility.

Passengers are not limited to a predefined meal schedule and can generally decide when they would like to dine during the flight. This can be particularly valuable on overnight and ultra-long-haul routes, where travelers may prefer to maximize sleep or adjust to a new time zone.

For selected departures from Germany, passengers can also pre-select their preferred main course before departure, helping ensure availability of their desired meal choice.

Travel writer Chris Chamberlin of Business Traveller argues that dining flexibility can be particularly valuable on long-haul flights, where passengers may be trying to adapt to a different time zone or maximize rest.

“By ordering what — and when — I like, I savour breakfast mid-flight upon waking . . . not later, when everybody else takes the default route,” he says.

For passengers departing Frankfurt, the dining experience begins at the airport terminal before boarding.

The Lufthansa First Class Terminal features an à la carte restaurant offering premium dishes and seasonal menus in a dedicated First Class environment. This allows travelers to enjoy a restaurant meal before their flight and creates a more seamless transition between the ground and onboard experience.

For many travelers, the First Class Terminal is as much a part of the experience as the flight itself.

Ricky Zhang, Prince of Travel, describes the Frankfurt First Class Terminal as one of the defining features of Lufthansa First Class, noting that many passengers view the ground experience as an integral part of the overall product.

“The First Class Terminal is part-and-parcel of the overall Lufthansa First Class experience, arguably surpassing even the onboard experience in terms of its sheer opulence,” Ricky says.

“Be sure to leave at least a few hours’ time to enjoy it fully. ”

The Skytrax World Airline Awards are presented annually by aviation research organization Skytrax and are based on passenger surveys conducted across hundreds of airlines worldwide.

Often described as the airline industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, the awards recognize excellence across a wide range of categories, including First Class, Business Class, airport lounges, cabin service, and onboard dining.

The awards are based on feedback from millions of travelers representing more than 100 countries and cover more than 300 airlines, making them one of the aviation industry’s most widely recognized passenger-voted awards.

Final Thoughts

Lufthansa’s First Class dining program reflects a broader trend among premium airlines to place greater emphasis on food, beverage, and personalized service.

The combination of chef-designed menus, flexible dining, a dedicated caviar service, and an extensive wine program creates an experience that extends beyond traditional airline catering.

Travelers considering Lufthansa First Class may find that the culinary component has become one of the most distinctive aspects of the journey.
