70 Days Across America:

A tiny corner cafe in downtown Oakland serves mouthwatering halal Mexican food so authentic, Donald Trump would build a wall around it! Maya Halal Taqueria serves burritos, bowls, nachos, tacos, and plates. Open for lunch and dinner six days a week!

Why I’m Here …

So what am I doing in Downtown Oakland? Actually, I grew up in Oakland, but I hadn’t been home in many years. In fact, I live overseas

To celebrate a milestone birthday, I decided give myself the trip of a lifetime – a 70-day trip across the United States.

Oakland was the fifth stop on the Northern California leg of my epic trip, which I was dubbing 70 Days Across America.

But it was also the most emotional stop on my trip. Because this is the town I was born in. And this was the town I grew up in.

My previous stops included San FranciscoLos Altos, Napa, and Concord. Future stops would include Pleasanton, Santa Cruz, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, and Berkeley. And then I would head out of state.

The restaurant serves halal Mexican food. And according to a sign on the sidewalk out front, the food was “so authentic, Donald Trump would build a wall around it”!

And the menu runs from burritos and burrito bowls to tacos and plates.

In addition, there was nachos, quesadillas, three vegan choices, tortas, and sides.

Meat choices include steak, ground beef, grilled chicken, shredded chicken, shrimp, and fish.

Because it was a halal restaurant, there was no pork.

I had lunch at the restaurant about three times during my stay in the ‘hood. And I stuck to the tacos each time, trying the steak, ground beef, and chicken versions.

I was tempted by the plates, which came with a side of rice and beans. And I’m sure the enchilada, flauta, and fajita plates were delicious.

However, I was at the beginning of a long trip. And I was watching my expenses. Also, because I wouldn’t be having access to a gym most of the time, I was trying to keep to leaner choices.

So tacos it was. But, oh, my goodness, the steak fries the guy at the next table was indulging in sure looked delicious!

The Verdict

The fact I made two return trips during my brief stay at a nearby hotel speaks volumes about this eatery.

The mouth-watering tacos came with onions, cilantro, and house salsa.

What I loved most was the crispiness of the tortillas! I’ll give this taqueria an enthusiastic two thumbs up!!!
