What’s in a Name?
Most resorts now have spas as do a growing number of hotels. But when a hotel or a resort includes the word “spa” in its name, your expectations of the spa tend to be a bit higher. Such was the case of the second property on my itinerary, the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa, where I recently spent three days and two nights.
In fact, a stop at the Nusa Dua Spa was, in fact was the first item on the itinerary proposed by my hosts. And it was a good thing because itt gave me the chance to see what, exactly, the spa had to offer Ant it was far more than massages, facials, and other kinds of spa treatments.
Within an hour of checking into the resort, I was pointed in the direction of the Nusa Dua Spa, which is an exclusive enclave tucked away near the hotel’s entrance.
90 Minute Nusa Dua Massage

First on the agenda was a 90 minute Nusa Dua Massage. The first question you get folllowing a massage is always, “How was your massage?”
Since I slept through most of my massage, I can’t honestly answer that question because I can’t remember! But that is usually the sign of a good massage! To clarify I felt very relaxed when the massage was over!
With a pedigree of 30 years, the hotel was the first five star resort in Nusa Dua. And it was the first hotel in Bali to open a spa.
But the hotel has also taken the spa experience to a new level, incorporating fitness into the mix/ And this is what sets the Nusa Dua Spa apart from most of the other spas that I have experienced in my travels over the years.
25 Metre Lap Pool

Treatment rooms and changing rooms complete with saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzi pools, and cold dips are housed in a building overlooking one of the best lap pools I have come across.
Twenty-five metres in length, the lap pool is situated under some leafy trees so sunshine filters through the leaves of trees throughout most of the day.
As a result, the water is a comfortable temperature – not too warm, and not too cool.
I have stayed at many hotels where the swimming pools were in perpetual shade And that meant that the water was too cold for comfort. On the other hand, other pools were in direct sunshine from early morning until late afternoon. Consequently, the water was too warm for serious swimming.
The water temperature at the Nusa Dua Spa was just right. As a result, I swam laps for an hour without skipping a beat.
Sports Centre

There are tennis and squash courts, a basketball ring, an aerobics studio, a games room, and a fully equipped gym. A spa café with healthful lunches, juices, and herbal teas rounds out the facilities.
Daily activities run from a cycling tour of the neighborhood to power walks to yoga to aerobics. I did the one hour cycling tour of the neighborhood on my first morning. Too bad I overslept on my second morning. As a result, I missed the power walk. Unfortunately, I had been really looking forward to it!
But I did manage the 11 am aquarobics classes on both of my mornings at the hotel. They were held in the hotel’s main swimming pool. And they were the highlight of my stay.
If I have any regrets, it’s only that I never made it to the gym. I met a charming Australian couple in the lap pool. While doing laps in the pool, we struck up a conversation. And we enjoyed each other’s company so much that we decided to have dinner together.
