Washington Nationals Team History
The Washington Nationals will make only their third appearance in the World Series in 2019.
The last time a DC team made it to the World Series was in 1933, when the Washington Senators lost to the New York Giants in five games.
The U.S. capital’s only baseball championship was in 1924, when the Senators defeated the New York Giants.
The Senators eventually left D.C., which didn’t have a team at all for more than three decades. The Montreal Expos — who were founded in 1969 and never made it to the World Series — moved to Washington in 2005.
The Nationals had never managed to advance in the postseason since arriving, going 0-4 in the NLDS over the last seven years.
The Washington Nationals compete in the East division of the National League of Major League Baseball (MLB).
The baseball team was established in 1969 in Montreal, Quebec, where they were called the Expos. They were Canada’s first MLB sports franchise.
The baseball team moved to Washington, DC, in 2005, where they were renamed to Washington Nationals.
The Nationals play at Nationals Park in the nation’s capital.
The baseball team has won the East division title four times, but it has never won a league championship.
Will this be the Nats’ lucky year?
