Seattle Sounders – Team Overview

The Seattle Sounders are a professional soccer team in the United States. And the Sounders compete in the Western Conference of the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Sounders Team History

The Sounders were established in 2009 as an expansion team. They have been described as a “Phoenix” team because they had risen from the ashes of a team in the North American Soccer League, which had played from 1974 to 1983.

The Sounders have been one of the MLS’s most successful teams. In fact, it has won the U.S. Open Cup four times. In addition, it won the Supporters’ Shield in 2014. And it won the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019.

Not only that, the team has qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs in each of its 12 seasons. Finally, the Sounders competed in the CONCACAF Champions League five times. And it advanced to the semi-finals once.

So how did the team get its name? Seattle is located on the Pudget Sound. You figure it out!

The Seattle Sounders play home games at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington. And they share the stadium with the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL).

Because soccer has a smaller following in the United States than American football, some sections of the stadium are covered with tarpaulin to create a cozier atmosphere.

Located at the 800 Occidental Avenue South in Seattle’s SoDo district, Lumen Field formerly called itself Seahawks Stadium, Qwest Field, and CenturyLink Field.
