The Back Story
I had an appointment in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island, which is a considerable distance from my home in the Northern New Territories.
Since traffic can be unpredictable, I decided to have lunch at a restaurant near the location of my appointment. That way, I could arrive whenever I arrived and linger in the restaurant until it was time for my appointment. No need to rush!
Coincidentally, I had lived in this neighborhood many years earlier, and i knew it was full of restaurants and cafes. But the dining out scene in Happy Valley is now much richer than it was when I lived there.

I decided to explore the neighborhood rather than choosing a restaurant in advance. After getting out of my taxi, I was spoiled for choice. Should I eat at Little Napoli, a pizzeria I had discovered two years earlier?
It was a temptation, but unfortunately, it didn’t open for lunch that day. After considering my options, I settled on the restaurant Ask for Alonzo, which was directly in front of the Happy Valley Tram Terminus.
Alonzo Italian Restaurant Hong Kong Overview

Ask for Alonzo is an Italian trattoria located in Hong Kong’s vibrant Happy Valley district. With an informal and relaxed atmosphere, the authentic Italian restaurant offers a delightful dining experience.
So what is the difference between a restaurant and a trattoria? A trattoria is a bit more casual.

There are currently seven Ask for Alonzo Italian restaurants in Hong Kong, and they are all located on Hong Kong Island. The restaurants boast diverse menus, including starters, pasta and risotto, mains, side dishes, and desserts.
Ask for Alonzo – Restaurant Menus

Ask for Alonzo Italian Restaurant Hong Kong has more than one menu. First, there is the a la carte menu, which has starters, pasta and risotto, mains, side dishes and desserts.
Next there is a Lunch Set Menu, which includes starters, main courses, and a choice of beverage or dessert. The Lunch Set Menu is served Monday to Friday.

Finally there are two Brunch menus. The first is an a la carte menu, and the second is a set menu. They are served Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
My Lunches at Alonzo
Since I was having lunch at Alonzo Italian Restaurant Hong Kong, I ordered from the Set Lunch Menu. I was entitled to one Starter, one Main Course, and either a beverage or the dessert of the day. Beverages included espresso, Americano, b, or iced tea.
Appetizers
The Lunch Set Menu at Alonzo Italian Restaurant Hong Kong started with a choice of five Starters. They included soup of the day, salad of the day, cold cuts and cheeses, tomato bruschetta, and handmade burrata cheese.

On my first visit to Alonzo Italian Restaurant Hong Kong, I started with a selection of Italian Cold Cuts and Cheeses. They came with two large slices of toast. This was almost a lunch in itself. Did I really need a main course?
Molto appetitoso!

On my second visit to Alonzo Italian Restaurant Hong Kong, I started with the Soup of the Day. And it was absolutely delicious! What did they put in it?
Suisita!
Main Courses
There was a choice of seven main courses. They included penne 4 formaggi, spaghetti alle vongole, rigatoni amatriciana, mushroom risotto, TLC panini, pan roasted primavera salad, and sea bream fillet.

On my first visit, I ordered the Penne Arrabbiata, which had a rich tomato-based Italian cheese sauce. The pasta was cooked al dente, just the way I like it. And the sauce was pungent and packed with flavor.
Buonissima!

On my second visit, I ordered the Mushroom Risotto, which was described as a mushroom and cheese fondue. Again, it was packed with flavor.
Gustoso!
Drinks

You have a choice of a beverage or the dessert of the day. Following those very satisfying starters and main courses, I didn’t have room for dessert. So I opted for an espresso, which came with two slices of a tasty sweet bread.
Ottimo!
The Ambiance

As a trattoria, Alonzo had an informal, casual ambiance with café chairs and tables with wooden tops. There was also an outdoor seating area facing the sidewalk, allowing diners to watch the world pass by.
The Verdict

I was so happy with my choice to have lunch at Ask for Alonzo Italian Restaurant Hong Kong that when I had another appointment in Happy Valley a few weeks later, I decided to eat there again. I give Ask for Alonzo an enthusiastic two thumbs up!
Eccellente!

I would love to visit for Brunch. Do you recommend the set menu or the A la carte?
Dining alone, I think ordering from the set menu makes the most sense. You have several choices for both the starters and the mains.
Sounds like another great Italian restaurant you found. The location sounds very convenient, and set menu is appealing.
There seems to have been an explosion of Italian restaurants in Hong Kong in recent years. It wasn’t always so.
Wow.. the appetizers do sound like a meal unto themselves. The food sounds absolutely delicious.
You’re right! I particularly liked the antipasti!
How can one be miserable in a place called ‘happy valley’? I just love all these names. And the restaurant… “Ask for Alonzo” sounds absolutely fab. Love the decor. The food looks heavenly. Would love to dine there. You are having so much fun. 🙂 I can just sense it from your posts.
Happy Valley actually has a sad history! I believe there was a malaria outbreak in the early days of Hong Kong’s development so a cemetery was built there, and it was renamed ‘happy” valley as a result. A sort of euphemism. The area is now an upper-middle class residential district with lots of F&B outlets. But it is most famous locally as the site of the Happy Valley Racecourse. Horseracing is immensely popular in Hong Kong.
Everything looks so delicious! I love reading your articles because they make me travel and discover beautiful places at the same time. Thanks for sharing your stories and experiences!
So glad you are enjoying my posts!
Looks so good and good to hear that there is a good Italian place to eat at n Hong Kong. Definitely worth trying.
I like the name of the restaurant which evokes a sense of warm welcome. Like the nice ambience too. I love risottos and their’s looks to be bursting with flavor.
The name is cute, isn’t it? And I can assure you, the risotto was absolutely bursting with flavor. It was practically an explosion!
I appreciate you sharing this food-related post. It makes me hungry for Italian foods.

Great review! I love Italian food and Ask for Alonzo looks just perfect! Can´t wait to try it on my next trip to Hong Kong!
I am happy to report that there are several good Italian restaurants in Hong Kong now. It’s no longer a choice between Pizza Hut and Spaghetti House!
Your blog deserves more recognition.
