Diamondback Team History

The Arizona Diamondbacks are a professional baseball team in United States. And the D-backs compete in the West division of the National  League (NL) of Major League Baseball (MLB).

The Diamondbacks were established in 1998. To clarify, they were an expansion team. And some fans call the team the Snakes.

So where to did the name come from? To start with, the owners wanted the team to  be named after the state rather than the city. Therefore, it had to be called the Arizona something.

When a contest was held to name the team, one of the suggestions was to called it the Arizona Phoenix. But that might have been a bit awkward.

And other suggestions included the Coyotes, the Rattlers, and the Scorpions.

In the end, the owners chose, Diamondbacks, a kind of rattlesnake that populates the desserts of Arizna. In addition, the name is a play on the diamonds baseball teams play on.

The Diamondbacks have won the West Division title five times.  And they won a wild card berth once.

Most importantly, the D-backs won the NL pennant in 2001. And they went on to win the the World Series that year, defeating the New York Yankees.

Most importantly, they were the first expansion team in MLB history to win the World Series that quickly.
