Best Views of Fireworks in Hong Kong

Three times a year, the skies over Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour erupt into a kaleidoscope of riotous colors. You can fight the crowds at many of the viewing spots on both sides of the harbour. Or you can enjoy a quiet evening at one of the restaurants offering spectacular harbour views. Either way, this is your guide to the best spots to watch fireworks in Hong Kong.

Fireworks Over Victoria Harbour

Hundreds of thousands of celebrants line both sides of Victoria Harbour three times each year to view fireworks in Hong Kong: Chinese New Year, Chinese National Day, and New Year’s Eve.

While Chinese National Day always falls on 1 October, and New Year’s Eve always falls on 31 December, the Lunar New Year takes place on a different day each year, but always between late January and mid-February.

In Hong Kong, Chinese New Year is a three-day official holiday, and the Chinese New Year Fireworks always takes place on the second night of the Lunar New Year. It begins at 8 pm and lasts about 23 minutes

Here are dates for upcoming Chinese New Year fireworks displays in Hong Kong:

  • 2025: January 30 (Thursday)
  • 2026: February 17 (Tuesday)
  • 2027: February 6 (Saturday)
  • 2028: January 26 (Wednesday)
  • 2029: February 13 (Tuesday)
  • 2030: February 3 (Monday)

Hong Kong Fireworks Tips

Anywhere is the world, fireworks displays attract large crowds, and Hong Kong is no exception. Public transport is overburdened with packed tuses and trains, and scheduled are extended overnight.  Parking lots fill up early. Streets are closed, traffic is diverted, and sidewalks are packed. Here are some tips:

  • Arrive Early: Popular spots fill up quickly, so getting there a few hours in advance is a good idea.
  • Dress Comfortably: Weather is likely to be warm on Chinese National Day, but it likely to be chilly on New Year’s Eve and on Chinese New Year’s Eve. So bring a jacket – at least! You might need to bundle up.
  • Bring Snacks and Drinks: Having some refreshments on hand to will make the wait more enjoyable.
  • Charge Your Devices: Ensure your phone or camera is fully charged to capture the spectacular moments.

Be forewarned that cloud cover can sometimes obscure views of the pyrotechnic display. While all three fireworks displays are scheduled during the dry months, rain is always possible.

Why Not Beat the Crowds and Dine Out?

Restaurants on Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula  offer an attractive alternative to braving the crowds when spectacular pyrotechnic display lights up the skies over Victoria Harbour.

Here are two lists of restaurants offering some of the best views of Victoria Harbour – one for each side of the harbour.  Some are located on the top floors of high rise hotels or commercial buildings. Others are right on the water.

A few of these restaurants offer outdoor seating. Others have outdoor terraces that you can walk out onto to watch the fireworks and then return inside.
