Is December a good time to visit The Land of Smiles? Thailand December events include a rare procession of barges down Bangkok’s majestic Chao Phraya River. Plus: a sailing regatta, a night marathon, and more. As for weather, temperatures are mild and skies are clear.
Thailand December Weather
In terms of weather, December is the coolest month of the year in Thailand. But keep in mind that this is the tropics, and what is considered “cool” in Thailand would still be considered “hot” in more temperate climates.
While the average high in Bangkok in December is 31 degrees Celsius, or 88 degrees Fahrenheit, the average low is 21 degrees Celsius, or 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
In fact, Bangkok enjoys a daily average of nine hours of sunshine in December. Usually, there are about two rainy days. Expect an average of 10 millimeters of rainfall during the month.
As for the humidity, the average is a relatively comfortable 62%. And the average sea temperature is 28 degrees Celsius, or 82 degrees Fahrenheit.
Winter runs from mid-November to mid-March. For many tourists, it is the best time to visit Thailand. Therefore, winter is the peak tourist season in the Land of Smiles. As a result, hotel room bargains are harder to find.

In most countries Father Day falls in June. One of the exceptions is Thailand, where Father’s Day falls in December.
In addition, Thailand is the only country in the world where Father’s Day is an official holiday.
That is because Father’s Day in Thailand falls on the birthday of Bhumibol Adulyadej (5 December 1927 – 13 October 2016), who was conferred with the title King Bhumibol the Great in 1987.
For this reason, Father’s Day is also called King’s Birthday. If the actual date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday.

In Chiang Mai, the celebrations are infused with tradition. Tha Pae Gate becomes the heart of the festivities, where lantern releases light up the night sky, symbolizing new beginnings. Cultural performances, including traditional Lanna music and dance, add a distinctly northern flavor to the countdown, making it one of the most atmospheric places to welcome the New Year.

I haven’t yet been to Thailand, but you’ve convinced me to plan for a December visit. All the festivals plus the history surrounding the River Kwai Bridge Week sound like an amazing itinerary.
I spent last Christmas in Thailand, and it’s great time to visit as the weather is a bit cooler than usual.
There are so many festivals to choose from! Which would you recommend to get the best insight into local culture?
Great question! I think the Balinese New Year, a.k.a. Nyepi or Silent Day, is a very unique experience. On this day, the entire island goes dark and quiet for 24 hours. Hotels are given a pass. They must turn off all external lights, and gets cannot leave the premises. But they organize activities such as meditation or movies. We ate dinner on the roof in the dark! (There were lights in the kitchen, where the food was prepared.) It was a very special experience. BTW, the date varies each year, but it is usually in the early spring.
You have me seriously thinking about Thailand in December (maybe even this year). I got excited about the flower festival but then I saw the jet ski competition. I’m an avid jet skier (but not competitive) so I would love to see that! But I’m a NYE baby so the full moon party this year looks like it would be really cool!
There is a Full Moon Party every month on the same island. I’ve never been, but I hear it’s lots of fun.
I would love to see the Regatta and many of the festivals. Is New Year’s celebration a big one? I know it’s a big deal in many Asian countries.
I think NYE is only a big thing if you go to a party or function. I can’t recall much happening in the streets. Maybe on Khaosan Road, which is popular with tourists.
