Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, marking six decades on the throne. Her Royal Majesty ascended the throne on 6 February 1952. Her coronation took place the following year on 2 June 1953.
The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will reach their climax during the first week of June 2012.
Buckingham Palace will co-ordinate the programme for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport will co-ordinate the Government’s role in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee 25 years ago in 1977. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee 50 years ago in 2002. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria, who did so in 1897.
Monday 4 June and Tuesday 5 June will be holidays, giving Britons a four day weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Tens of thousands of tourists from around the world are expected to travel to Britain in 2012 to take part in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, filling its hotels. And hundreds of millions more will watch the celebrations on television.
