The Back Story

The last time I transited through Pacific Place Hong Kong, I was so captivated by the relaxing ambiance of the Lobby Lounge at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong, I decided to chill over a glass of Chardonnay.
With melodic live music, it was a very relaxing experience.
MY FIRST HAND REVIEW: ISLAND SHANGRI-LA LOUNGE – A RESTFUL OASIS IN A RESTLESS CITYY>>
Since there are two other five-star hotels atop the mall, I decided to give another one a try: JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong.
There were massive windows with sweeping views and live music, but it seemed more like a restaurant than a lounge, and I wasn’t ready yet for dinner.
So I opted for the tiny Dolce 88 Italian Cafe, which was tucked away to the other side of the Lobby. It also offered a nice view.
Dolce 88 Italian Cafe – Overview

Dolce 88 Italian Cafe Hong Kong is a cross between a coffee house and a deli. In addition to signature espressos, signature coffees, hot chocolate, and teas, it serves light bites such as salads, sandwiches, wraps, croissants, muffins, tarts and cakes.
Tucked away atop the Pacific Place shopping mall on Hong Kong Island, it adjoins the JW Marriott Hotel Hong and offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with panoramic city view.
Dolce 88 Italian Cafe – the Food and Beverage

I ordered an iced americano (HK$40 + HK$12 to add ice) and a pineapple bun (HK$38).
Pineapple
buns are a popular treat in neighboring Guangdong province, and this one was surprisingly large. But despite its large size, it was also surprisingly light.
It also was laced with shredded coconut
. Absolutely
delicious! I think pineapple and coconut are a flavor combination made in heaven.
Total damage: HK$90 (US$11.50; 390 Thai baht). There was no service charge. But I do think charging the equivalent of more than US$1.50 for ice was a bit of a stretch.
Dolce 88 Italian Cafe – the Ambiance

Dolce 88 Italian Cafe had a comfortable, informal vibe, and the staff were very friendly. It was also light and airy, which great views if you get a seat facing the harbour.
Dolce 88 Italian Cafe – the Verdict

The coffee was good, the pineapple bun was delicious, and the ambiance was informal and welcoming. Would I go back? Yes. In fact I did return with a friend a few weeks later. Unfortunately, the place was full.

Interesting that there is a charge for ice-that’s a new one for me! But Dolce 88 Italian Cafe sounds lovely, especially with the views!
I love finding oases in the middle of big cities such as this. Hopefully we’ll have a chance to try this one out.
I visited Hong Kong right before the Handover. Interesting place.
It’s hard to believe the Handover was already more than 25 year ago! The skyline has certainly changed since then.
