US Preclearance Lounge Opens at Zayed International Airport

  • Etihad Airways opens new lounge at Zayed International Airport’s U.S. Preclearance facility.
  • The exclusive space offers direct boarding on select flights for premium passengers.
  • The Abu Dhabi-based airline currently flies non-stop to four cities in the United States: Boston, Chicago, New York (Kennedy), and Washington, DC (Dulles), as well as Toronto, Canada.
  • The carrier will launch flights to Atlanta, Georgia, in July 2025.

Zayed International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi has joined the very small number of airports in the world where US-bound passengers can clear customs before departure.

And to make things even more convenient, Etihad Airways has opened a U.S. Preclearance Lounge at AUH, further enhancing the travel experience for premium passengers flying to the United States.

In fact, it is one of only a very few airports in the world with such a facility. The overwhelming majority of people flying to the U.S. clear immigration after landing at American airport.

So how does this work?

Situated close to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance facility at the airport, the new lounge provides “eligible travelers” with a peaceful place to chill after they have finished their U.S. entry formalities until it is time to board their flight, Etihad Airways says.

So, who qualifies as an “eligible traveler”?

“The U.S. Preclearance Lounge welcomes eligible passengers travelling in The Residence, First or Business, as well as Platinum and Emerald Etihad Guest members,” a Etihad press release explains. “Access is also available for purchase, subject to availability.”

The facility offers beverages and light dining options, complementing Etihad’s premium travel experience. Select flights offer the convenience of direct boarding from the lounge, enhancing the seamless journey.

To take full advantage of the premium experience, eligible passengers are advised to “begin their journey at Etihad’s acclaimed First or Business Class Lounge in the main terminal before proceeding to the U.S. Customs and Border.

“By completing all U.S. customs and immigration formalities before boarding in Abu Dhabi, guests arrive in the States as domestic passengers, saving valuable time upon arrival. Guests can simply collect their bags and go, or proceed seamlessly to their connecting flights.”

U.S. Preclearance Facilities Explained

According to CBP, the agency operates preclearance facilities at 15 airports around the world for the purpose of inspecting travelers before they board flights destined for the United States.

This allows them to bypass CBP and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) inspections when they arrive in the U.S. In other words, they can “proceed directly to their connecting flight or destination,” the CSP website says.

In other words, you arrive on U.S. soil as if you were already in the United States. You don’t need to go through customs. You can simply pick up your bags and go. If you are catching a connecting flight, your bags can usually be forwarded directly to that flight.

Travel Convenience

So how does preclearance enhance the premium passenger experience? According to Ben Schlappig of One Mile at a Time, it’s great to be able to deal with the stress of immigration before departure, and it is possible that it will make connections easier for both you and your bags. But it’s not for everyone.

“If you’re connecting from another flight onto your US-bound flight (like if you’re flying from Delhi to Abu Dhabi to New York), you’re more likely to misconnect, because you can’t just make your connection if you have very limited time,” he warns.

“Clearing the facility takes time, and you often have to be through there an hour or so before departure.”

Which Countries Offer U.S. Preclearance Facilities?

To date, the United States is the only country offering preclearance facilities at foreign airports, and it offers such facilities at only a small handful of airports,  most of them in Canada.

In addition to the facility at Abu Dhabi, the CBP operates preclearance facilities at airports in five other countries:

  • Dublin and Shannon in Ireland;
  • Aruba;
  • Bermuda;
  • Nassau in the Bahamas;
  • Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg in Canada.

The service was first launched at Toronto International Airport in the early 1950s. Other Canadian airports were added later.

Zayed International Airport

Zayed International Airport is the primary international airport serving Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It offers connecting flights to a vast array of travel destinations in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.

AUH is the second busiest airport in the UAE after Dubai International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the Middle East and is the hub for Etihad Airways as well as an operating base for Wizz Air Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi.

Etihad’s North American Destinations

Etihad currently serves four U.S. destinations with nonstop flights to Boston, Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C. North of the border, Etihad flies to Toronto. The airline will launch services to Atlanta in July 2025, further strengthening its commitment to the important North American market.
