Aviation: Flying Business Class on United Airlines from Hong Kong to Tokyo

Michael Taylor is flown Business Class from Hong Kong to Tokyo on United Airlines. This is the 2nd in a series on his trip to the Japanese capital.

Following a relaxing and leisurely breakfast in the United Club lounge at Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok International Airport, I wandered over to Gate 42.

Only 14 of us were flying United Business. We were assigned to two boarding groups and asked to get into two lines. It seemed a bit confusing as none of us were sure which group we were in or who had come first.

Once on board the Boeing 737-800, I settled into Seat 2A. Oh, yes! This was Business Class the way I remembered it: Roomy, comfortable, and luxurious. Even though I was seated in front of the bulkhead, I had plenty of legroom.

Business amenities included laptop power, USB ports, an amenity kit, a multi-course meal, and your choice of beverages.

Free Flow of Champagne

The champagne started to flow while we were still on the ground. Following a brief hiatus for takeoff, it continued to flow once we were aloft. I switched to white wine when lunch was served.

My meal started with a very yummy green salad as well as mouth watering duck with a tangy mango chutney. The main course featured a moist and tender chunk of perfectly grilled chicken, a delightfully savoury rissoti, and grilled vegetables that practically melted in your mouth.

Then there was that creamy dessert. Too bad I can’t remember what it was called. But I finished all of it – in spite of myself.

That Personal Touch

My solicitous flight attendant kept my wine glass full – both during and after the meal. At one point, I asked, “Do you have any nuts or anything?”

The flight attendant grimaced, walked back to the galley, and returned with a cup full of trail mix.

I took one look at thde trail mix and said, “This is from your own personal stash, isn’t it?”

She looked at me, nodded sheepishly, and said, “They didn’t give us any nuts on this flight.”

Say what you want. Sometimes it’s those small personal touches that make travel fun.
