The Back Story
I had a morning appointment at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin in the New Territories of Hong Kong.
Because I live in a somewhat isolated village in another part of the New Territories, I thought it would be rather stressful and complicated traveling from my village to the hospital during the morning rush hour.
So I decided to book a hotel room in a hotel near Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin. That would turn a very stressful experience into a (hopefully) more pleasant experience. It might even be fun!!!
My research indicated that there were five hotels in Sha Tin close to Prince of Wales Hospital. After considering the options, I settled on the Courtyard by Marriott Hong Kong Sha Tin hotel.
Furthermore, I decided to spend two nights at the hotel. In addition to the hospital, there some other spots near the hotel I wanted to check out. So this could be a sort of “staycation,” allowing me to check out a part of Hong Kong I wasn’t familiar with.
I was particularly interested in visiting Che Kung Temple and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
My Arrival – Hong Kong Courtyard Sha Tin

Upon my arrival at the Shek Mun MTR station, I wasn’t sure exactly where the hotel was located. So I went to the nearest taxi rank and hopped in a taxi.
Unexpectedly, the taxi driver had never heard of the hotel. I guess he was from another part of town. So he had to call to ask for directions.
Because the driver wasn’t familiar with the lay of the land, it was a longer drive to the hotel than it should have been. Making matters worse, the driver dropped me off on the street rather at the hotel’s main entrance. So I had to wander around to find the entrance to the hotel.
As it turned out, it was a long walk up the hotel’s uphill driveway to the lobby, which is located on the second floor (first floor if you’re British).
It was only when I went out looking for a place to have dinner that I discovered the hotel was actually a very short walk from the station! Not only that, there was a large plaza adjoining the station with dozens of cafes, restaurants, bars, shops, and other retail businesses.
But more on that later.
The moral of this story: when in Hong Kong, get a print-out of the address of your destination in Chinese. Many drivers don’t speak English.
Overview – Hong Kong Courtyard Sha Tin

The Hong Kong Courtyard by Marriott Sha Tin is a towering 30-story hotel, which occupies an entire city block. Best of all, there are three important retail outlets on the ground floor: a supermarket, a health and beauty outlet, and a fast food outlet. A good hotel for long-staying guests?
Accommodation – Hong Kong Courtyard Sha Tin
The Courtyard by Marriott Hong Kong Sha Tin has 493 guest rooms, including 450 standard rooms and 43 suites, which are spread across 30 floors. Each room has a desk, a coffee and tea maker, a small refrigerator, and an in-room safe.
The exact specifications vary, but most rooms measure about 26 square meters. And suites measure from 52 to 78 square meters.
Water and Toiletries

Under government regulations that went into effect in early 2024, hotel rooms in Hong Kong are not allowed to provide complimentary bottled water.
Therefore, hotel guests are encouraged to bring their own water bottles. However, there are machines in the hallways where you can refill your bottles.
Good luck on your first attempt! I couldn’t figure out how to do it! Fortunately, another hotel guest came to the rescue.

The new regulations don’t stop there. Disposable toiletries are also no longer allowed. Fortunately, the hotel provides refillable bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and lotion, which must remain in the room.
No more souvenirs of your stay!
However, there are two exceptions. The hotel supplies toothbrushes made of biodegradable materials and tiny bars of soap.
Room 1232

I thought I had booked a room with a river view. So I was a little disappointed when I entered room 1302, looked out the window, and saw what looked like an industrial estate.
Not a very nice view! So I contacted the front desk and asked if there was a room with a view of the river.
Room 1105

I was escorted to room 1105, which had a similar layout to room 1302, but the view was much, much nicer!
I could see the river, I could see greenery, I could see majestic emerald mountains in the distance.
There appeared to be nearby places I would like to explore – if only I had had the time.

There was a comfortable king size bed with excellent linens.

There was a spacious work station.

There was a marble-clad bathroom with a walk-in rain shower.
Food and Beverage – Hong Kong Courtyard Sha Tin

The Sha Tin Courtyard Hotel has three food and beverage outlets. I enjoyed the breakfast buffet both mornings at MoMo Café.
The café was very spacious with different seating areas. It was bathed in sunlight thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows.
There were several live kitchens with both local and international food choices. Whether you wanted dim sum or noodles, eggs cooked to order or waffles, salads or hot dishes, you would not be disappointed.
BTW, if you want to eat breakfast at the hotel, make sure to indicate that when you book your room. If you include breakfast in the tariff, you will enjoy a substantial discount. The price for walk-ins is substantially higher than the price you pay if you specify “include breakfast” when you make your reservation.
In addition to its buffets, MoMo Café also has ala carte menus. It serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, opening at 6.30 am and remaining open until 10 pm.
LEVELthirty Lounge & Bar is located on the hotel’s top floor, offering sweeping views of Tolo Harbour and the surrounding mountainous terrain. Hours vary.
The Lobby Lounge was not open during my visit.
Hotel Facilities – Hong Kong Courtyard Sha Tin

The Sha Tin Courtyard Hotel has an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during swimming season. It is set amid a lovely garden. Unfortunately, I forgot my swimming suit!

The Shatin Marriott Courtyard has a well-equipped fitness room with treadmills, stationary bicycles, and cross-trainers.
In addition, there are weight-training machines and free weights.

The Hong Kong Marriott Courtyard Shatin has a sumptuous spa with a full menu of spa treatments.
Unique Selling Proposition

If the Courtyard Marriott Hong Kong Sha Tin has a unique selling proposition, it would have to be its proximity to important retail outlets, making it a perfect Hong Kong hotel for long-staying guests.
For example, there is a full-service Wellcome supermarket on the hotel’s ground floor. Wellcome is Hong Kong’s second largest (and oldest) supermarket chain.

Right next door is a Mannings, Hong Kong’s leading health and beauty chain. And it has a pharmacist on duty.

At the back of the hotel is a spacious McDonald’s McCafe outlet, which opens at 6 am and remains open until midnight.

If you are returning to the hotel on foot, make sure to enter via the rear entrance to avoid making the long hike up the hotel’s driveway. An escalator will take you direct to the lift lobby.
There’s also a Citibank ATM. This is important because Citibank ATMs are relatively hard to find in Hong Kong! Needless to say, there are plenty of ATMs for local banks all over the place.
Discover Shek Mun

The Courtyard Marriott Hong Kong Sha Tin is located in Shek Mun, which is East of the Shing Mun River in the Sha Tin district of the New Territories of Hong Kong.
Shek Mun has residential, retail, and entertainment elements as well as light industry, manufacturing, educational institutions, and sports facilities.
I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of greenery and landscaping on my taxi ride from the hotel to the hospital.
Best of all was King’s Wing Plaza, which adjoins the Shek Mun MTR Station. Full of restaurants, cafes, shops, and boutiques, it is a five-minute walk from the hotel.
I had dinner on my first night at a Japanese restaurant. I dined at a Shanghainese restaurant on my second night.
I could have dined my way around the world if I had spent a few more nights at the hotel.
