Tong Chong Kitchen Quarry Bay [Hong Kong]

Tong Chong Kitchen is five restaurants in one. To clarify, it has five live kitchens serving Hong Kong and pan-Asian dishes as well as Taiwanese bubble tea. Tong Chong Kitchen opens for breakfast, lunch, and early dinners Mondays through Fridays. It closes on Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays.

The Back Story

Tong Chong should not be confused with Tung Chung, which is pronounced the same way in English.

Tung Chung is located on the Northern shore of Lantau Island, which is also home to Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong Disneyland, the Ngong Ping Cable Car, and the Big Buddha.

Tong Chong Street is the name of a short street just outside Taikoo Place in the Quarry Bay district of Hong Kong Island.

Several food and beverage outlets line Tong Chong Street. It is also home to the Tong Chong Street Market on weekdays.

Tong Chong Kitchen – Overview

Tong Chong Kitchen is a casual eatery, which is actually five restaurants in one. But there is a common dining area so friends and colleagues can order dishes from the different eateries and dine together.

Tong Chong Kitchen serves Hong Kong and pan-Asian dishes in comfortable surroundings at reasonable prices/

The restaurant is located in Devon House, which is a part of Taikoo Place, a complex of several office buildings and a residential tower.

Tong Chong Kitchen opens for breakfast, lunch, and early dinners Monday to Friday. It closes on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

BTW, Taikoo Place should not be confused with Taikoo Shing, a nearby large-scale private housing estate.

Tong Chong Kitchen – the Five Restaurants

Cha Chaan Teng is a highly popular dining concept, which originated many years ago in Hong Kong.

Similar to cafes or “greasy spoons” in the West, they are usually small in size, serving a mixed menu of Cantonese and Hong Kong-adapted versions of Western dishes.

The Cha Chaan Teng station at Tong Chong Kitchen serves the types of dishes you would usually find at a traditional cha chaan teng in Hong Kong.

This This Rice is a surprising name for a restaurant until you understand the concept. There are several dishes, which are served from a steam table. You can order two of them plus a helping a white rice.

In fact, This This Rice minded me of what you would sometimes find in a company canteen.

Indian and Japanese dishes share the same station at Tong Chong Kitchen, but the similarity stops there. From India, you’ll find everything from curries to samosas. From Japan, you’ll find things like donburi rice bowls.

Noodles are popular across Asia, so it’s not surprising that one of the kitchens serves noodles from various Asian countries.

Tong Chong Kitchen – Our Yummy Lunch

My dining companion and I shared two dishes. First, we enjoyed a very tasty Goan Fish Curry. If you not familiar with Indian geography, Goa is a province of India, which was colonized by the Portuguese. Many people consider Goa a Foodie’s Paradise!

Laksa is a popular noodle dish in Southeast Asia, and the Singaporean variety is considered best.

If you’ve never tried Laksa, the noodles are topped with a thick pungent sauce, which is usually composed of curry powder and coconut milk with tamarind and gelugur.

In addition, laksa usually also contains either chicken, prawns, or fish.

Since I love laksa and I love shrimp, ordering the Singaporean Shrimp Laksa was a no brainer.

And they were absolutely amazing!

I was surprised to learn that Sweet and Sour Pork was the most popular dish with local diners at the This This Rice station.

But since sweet and sour is my favorite Chinese dish, I asked if I could have a small sample.

OMG! It did not disappoint! Not surprisingly, the sweet and sour pork was my favorite dish, too!

Tong Chong Kitchen – the Ambiance

Tong Chong Kitchen has a spacious and comfortable dining area with both booths and tables. Thanks to the uninterrupted picture windows, it was bathed in sunlight during our visit.

Tong Chong Kitchen – the Verdict
