Hotel Industry News

The InterContinental Hong Kong rebranding as the Regent Hong Kong heralds a return to the hotel’s roots.  The hotel closes on 20 April 2020.. After a two-year transformation, it reopens with a completely new exterior and interior from rooms to public spaces.

Rebranding of InterContinental Hong Kong

The total transformation of the InterContinental Hong Kong will include all guest rooms and suites. And that includes the bathrooms! Now just what can we expect?

In addition, the lobby and other public areas will get a new look. The restaurants will be re-invented. And the same goes for the events venues.

Finally, the building’s exterior will get a more contemporary treatment. Does that mean an end to the dark brown marble facade? I always found it a bit drab!

To sum up, the Intercontinental Hong Kong rebranding as the Regent Hong Kong  is the hotel’s most sweeping renovation in three decades. The iconic hotel will close on 20 April 2020. And it will reopen as the Regent Hong Kong two years later.

Food and Beverage Outlets

The hotel has six food and beverage outlets. Five of them will serve their last meals on 19 April 2020.

While the hotel is under renovation, the hotel’s celebrated Cantonese restaurant will remain open.

Diners will have access to Yan Toh Heen though the neighboring  K11 Musea shopping mall.

Hotel History

In a way, the InterContinental Hong Kong is returning to its roots. Originally it opened as the The Regent Hong Kong in 1980.

I remember it well as I was living in Hong Kong at the time. The hotel’s lobby lounge and lower level cafe offered spectacular harbour views.

I attended a lavish party at the hotel on the eve of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty on 1 July 1997. It was a night to remember!

The 503-room hotel was rebranded as the InterContinental Hong Kong in 2001. IHG owned and operated the hotel until  2015.

Gaw Capital Partners acquired the hotel in 2015 on behalf of a consortium of investors. The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) acquired a majority stake in Regent Hotels and Resorts in March 2018.

Two-thirds of the hotel’s rooms and suites have spectacular view of Victoria Harbour.

In addition to several food and beverage outlets, the hotel has a feng shui inspired I-Spa and Pool Terrace with infinity spa pools, a 24-hour Fitness Centre, 11 function rooms, and a ballroom with 22,626 square feet of meeting space.
