Hong Kong Restaurant Review

A Japanese restaurant in Kowloon is serving a Sakura Kaiseki Set Dinner in celebration of Cherry Blossom Season in Japan. The eight course menu features dishes with seasonal ingredients prepared  in a variety of styles.

Kaiseki is a multi-course Japanese style set meal, which often features seasonal and local ingredients.

Served on trays to individual diners, each course is often prepared in a different way.

Sagano,  the Japanese restaurant at the New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel in Kowloon, varies its kaiseki menu every one or two months.

In celebration of the Cherry Blossom Season in Japan, the Japanese restaurant serves a Sakuran Keiseki Set Dinner during the months of March  and April.

Keiseki set dinners at the eatery follow a similar pattern each month: they begin with a tray full of appetizers followed by sashimi, a stewed dish, a grilled dish, a deep-fried dish, a vinegared dish, sushi, and dessert.

My favourtite courses were the appetizers, which had a pleasant combination of flavours and textures, the sashimi – especially the fatty tuna, and the dessert. I loved the unusual  combination of fruit and jelly.

I didn’t particularly care for the spring vegetable tempura. Two of the veggies were a bit too bitter for  my taste.

Sushi was the last course before dessert, and it represented one of the biggest surprises of the evening. The egg, boiled shrimp, dried gourd, and sea eel fell a bit flat. It looked better than it tasted.

But the red miso soup that accompanied it was the best miso soup I have ever had.
