The Back Story
Ideally, I would have arrived at Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel in style by London Cab. There would have been an advance team in place to capture it all, posting it live on social media. Wouldn’t that have been cool? But my arrival was much less dramatic. Rather than arriving by cab, I arrived on foot, as the previous hotel I stayed at was right next door.
To clarify, Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel was the fourth hotel I stayed at on my first trip away from home in more than three years. My initial stay was arranged by Delivering Asia Communications. And it started out as a three-night hosted stay.
I spent my first two nights walking in the footsteps of royalty at Chakrabongse VIllas, an exclusive riverfront hotel owned by Narisa Chakrabongse, granddaughter of a HRH Prince Chakrabongse AD. There were only four villas and three suites!
Then I moved to the Lancaster Bangkok, a family-run five-star hotel, with an entirely different vibe. In fact, I had stayed there two times before. And my stay there was like a walk down Memory Lane!
From the Lancaster, I moved to Maduzi Hotel Bangkok, a trendy boutique hotel in the heart of Bangkok’s bustling Asoke district. And I was blown away by the hotel’s stunning interior design.
While staying at the Maduzi, I was notified that a newly opened budget hotel targeting digital nomads wanted to host me for a couple of nights, As I was checking out of the Maduzi, I asked the general manager of the hotel if he could arrange a taxi for me.
Following a quick search on Google, he said, “I don’t think you need a taxi. The hotel is located about 50 yards from here.”
As it turned out, the hotel was situated just down Sukhumvit Soi 16 from Maduzi’s back entrance. And the GM and the bartender helped me carry my bags. Talk about service with a smile!
Overview – Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel
Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel is one of the cheapest hotels in Bangkok. And the hotel had opened a few months earlier in late 2022. Therefore, it had all the latest mod-cons. Coincidentally, the stylish budget hotel faced the same street as the Maduzi’s back entrance, which explains why Its GM was not aware of its existence.
Targeting digital nomads and intrepid backpackers, the Hotel Jono Bangkok Asok didn’t have a conventional lobby. Instead, there was a co-working space, which was to become my favourite spot go on line and hang out.
Located in the Asoke section of Bangkok’s bustling Klongtoei district near Sukhumvit Road, it is located a short walk from mass transit, shopping, wet markets, parks, and a host of dining options.
Rooms were compact but well laid out, with surprisingly comfortable beds, universal electrical outlets, and multiple USB ports.

Co-working Space – Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel
As a budget hotel, Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel doesn’t have a conventional lobby. Nor does it have any food and beverage outlets. Instead, it has an informal co-working space. So most hotel guests purchase something to eat at the nearby minimart, 24-hour supermarket, or the many cafes and street vendors that line Sukhumvit Soi 16.
The co-working space at the Hotel Jono Bangkok Asok has a coffee-making machine, microwave, and refrigerator. Coffee and tea are complimentary 24/7. Breakfast cereals and instant noodles are for sale at a modest price.
In addition to serving as a comfortable spot to eat, the co-working space doubles as a chill spot to hang out. And you never know whom you’re gonna meet!
When I overheard some Taiwanese tourists having a difficult time communicating with staff, I was able to serve as an impromptu interpreter. And when I overheard a couple of Brazilians chatting in Portuguese, I got the chance to practise another one of my foreign language skills.
“You are the first person I’ve ever met outside Brazil who could speak Portuguese,” one of the well-traveled Brazilians said to me.
I also met a charming couple from Japan, an American couple who had come to Thailand for medical tourism, a flight attendant from Switzerland, some travelers from Hong Kong, the list goes on.
Accommodation – Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel
As a boutique hotel, Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel has just 65 rooms, and there are three categories. While most rooms feature super king-size beds measuring 2 by 2 meters, four rooms have standard twin beds. All rooms have an efficient work space with universal electrical outlets and USP ports. And all of them have private bathrooms.
To start with, there are 40 Recharge rooms. And 30 of them have windows with a view. Meanwhile, the 10 Recharge rooms on lower floors have graffiti on the walls outside the window.
I stayed in Room 104, a Recharge room with a cartoon of two Muay Thai boxers painted on the wall outside my room. And they kept me company during my stay!
Next, there are 10 Recharge X rooms, which are larger and have a comfortable chair. Finally, there are 15 Snooze rooms, which don’t have windows. These black-out rooms are popular with travelers wanting to sleep in total darkness. Instead of having windows they mirrors on the wall.
Because Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel targets tech-savvy digital nomads, it has introduced a custom application with state-of-the-art capabilities.
In addition to offering general information about the hotel and Sukhumvit Soi 16, the innovative app offers the following functions:
- Serves as a mobile room key;
- Controls lights, air conditioning, and TV casting;
- Allows guests to make reservations and special requests during their stay;
- Allows guests to chat with Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel staff in multiple languages throughout and after their stay.
Where to Eat Along Sukhumvit Soi 16
While Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel doesn’t have a food and beverage outlet of its own, it is within a short walk of two 24-hour markets as well as innumerable cafes, bistros, snack bars, and restaurants. In addition, numerous roadside vendors set up shop along Sukhumvit Soi 16.
The number of dining out options within walking distance of the hotel are far too numerous to list. Therefore, I’m focusing on the eateries lining Sukhumvit Soi 16 that I found myself dining at time after time during my extended stay at the hotel.
The Coffee Club – Thai and international favrourites. Plus: iced drinks and gourmet coffees. My favourite: the classic cheeseburger.

You’ll never to hungry in the Big Mango. And the Asoke section of the Klongtoei district is no exception. In addition to Soi 16, there are numerous eating out options within a short walk of Jono Bangkok Asoke Hotel. And many of the best are located within the nearby Terminal-21 shopping mall.
Terminal21 has countless eateries ranging from food courts to fast food outlets to fine-dining restaurants. And they run the gamut from American to Middle Eastern to Japanese to Mexican to regional Thai.
Ponn Cafe – home-style regional Thai cuisine. Popular with locals. Recommended dishes: chicken with cashew nuts and gingko and red curry with chicken.

Location – Nearby Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel
Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel occupies a prestigious location in the Asoke section of the Klongtoei district of the Thai capital. In fact, it is a short walk from Sukhumvit Road, one of Bangkok’s busiest thoroughfares, which is lined with hotels, restaurants, day spas, entertainment venues, and shops.
Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel is nearby the intersection of two mass transit systems. In fact, the Asoke BTS Skytrain Station and the Sukhimvit MRT Station are within a five- to 10-minute walk of the trendy boutique hotel.
In addition, the Sukhumvit SkyWalk and the Terminal21 shopping mall are also nearby. But rather than crossing the street at street level (the light can take forever to change) or walking up the outdoor staircase, take a short cut through the airconditioned lobby of Exchange Tower, which has an escalator leading to the elevated walkway.
As a budget hotel, Jono Asok Bangkok Hotel doesn’t offer laundry services. Nor does it have a spa. However, there are there several businesses along Sukhumvit Soi 16, And they include a shop offering laundry services and several massage parlours. A couple of my favourites follow:
Mary’s Drycleaning & Laundry – located a short walk from Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel, this cleaners can be confused with a hair salon. But it also offers next day laundry services, and it can pick up and deliver from the hotel for a modest fee. Most important, it opens seven days a week.

Yansbai Massage – there are numerous massage parlours in the neighborhood, but this one proved to be my favourite. It offers foot massages, Thai massages, oil massage, and other spa treatments.

Forget overpriced hotel minibars! A 24-hour 7-Eleven and full-service Foodland supermarket are located a very short walk from the hotel. The minimart is across the street to your left. And the supermarket is down the street to your right.
Other key attractions within a short walk include Terminal21, one of Bangkok’s largest shopping malls, and Benchakitti Park, a veritable green lung. Meanwhile, the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center is located at the far end of the park.

The distance from Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel to Suvarnabhumi Airport is roughly 28 kilometers (18 miles) by taxi. And the trip takes about 45 minutes to an hour when traffic is light. But it can take quite a bit longer during rush hour.
The distance from Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel to Don Mueang Airport is roughly 21 kilometers (14 miles) by taxi. And the trip takes about 45 minutes to an hour when traffic is light. Again, it can take much longer during rush hours.
Given the choice, which Bangkok airport should you choose?
The Verdict
In terms of its location, Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel excels. It is close to an important transport intercharge, and shopping and dining are both within easy reach. A massive park is also a short walk from the hotel. And the hotel tends to sell out when exhibitions and trade fairs are held at the nearby Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
One of my most important considerations when choosing a hotel is close proximity to an all-night minimart. There is always something you forgot to pack. And you never know what you might need in the middle of the night.
Not only does Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel have an all-night minimart a short walk from the front door. A 24-hour supermarket with an all-night lunch counter is equally close.
But what really sets the hotel apart from the pack is the very friendly staff and the very resourceful hotel manager.
I had some unexpected special requirements during my lengthy stay, which I’m not going to get into here. But the hotel manager turned out to be an absolute lifesaver on countless occasions. In fact, he provided services I would not have expected of the concierge of a five-star hotel. Let alone one of the cheapest hotels in Bangkok!
As a result, I became a long-staying guest and consider this my home away from home n the Big Mango!
