Thailand in January, a good time to visit? To start with, January is the coolest and driest month of the year, with mild temperatures, low humidity, and minimal rainfall, offering ideal conditions for sightseeing, beach-hopping, and outdoor activities.  There are also a handful of cultural events, such as Children’s Day and regional festivals. However, January is also peak travel season, so discounts may be limited and popular destinations can be crowded.

So how is the weather in Thailand in January? The weather in Thailand in January is cool. In fact. January  is one of the coolest and driest months of the year in Thailand. Therefore, January is considered a good time to visit the Land of Smiles.

However, because January is a good time to visit Thailand, it is also the peak tourist season. As a result, bargains on hotel rooms are harder to find.


January Weather in Bangkok

The weather in  Bangkok in January is quite comfortable. For example, the average high in Bangkok is 32 degrees Celsius. And that works out to  90 degrees Fahrenheit.

While that might sound hot if you live in a temperate climate, in Thailand, it is considered cool!

And the average low is a comfortable 21 degrees Celsius, or 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

In fact, the Thai capital enjoys a daily average of nine hours of sunshine in January. And there are only about two rainy days. An average of 10 millimeters of rain falls during the month.

As for the humidity, the average is 67%. And the sea temperature averages 28 degrees Celsius, or 83 degrees Fahrenheit.


January Weather in Other Thai Travel Destinations

Chiang Mai – because of the good weather, January is considered to be an ideal time to visit Chiang Mai.

Chiang Rai – expect moderately cool weather in Chiang Rai in January. But it does tend to be a bit humid.

Hua Hin – expect pleasant cool weather (by Thai standards) in January in Hua Hin. In fact, January is the coolest month of the year in the charming seaside resort.

Khao Yai – expect moderate heat with gentle breezes in Khao Yai in January.

Krabi – expect perfect weather, calm seas, and crowded beaches. This is the peak tourist season in Krabi.

Koh Samui – expect a little bit of rain in early January in Koh Samui. But the rain should taper off as January progresses.

Pattaya – expect pleasant weather with little chance of rain in Pattaya in January.

Phuket – expect perfect weather, calm seas, and crowded beaches. This is also the peak tourist season.

Check out this shortlist of events taking place in Thailand in January. However,  keep in mind that dates sometimes change. And sometimes events are canceled at the last minute. This is especially true during the pandemic!

Therefore, you might want to check with tourism authorities before booking your hotel room. Better safe than sorry!


New Year Festival – 1 & 2 January 2026

Both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are official holidays in Thailand. Because New Year’s Day falls on a Thursday in 2026, Friday 2 January will also be an official holiday, giving Thais a long weekend, with more time to celebrate, travel or rest.

Full Moon Party – 3 January 2026

The Full Moon Party is held on the beach of Haad Rin every month on the night of the full moon.

DJs play a variety of musical styles including trance, dubstep, reggae, and techno. Jugglers, fire-eaters, and fireworks add drama to the all-night event.

As of 2026, Full Moon Parties on Ko Pha Ngan will now be held on the actual night of the full moon, thanks to a change in Thai regulations that permits alcohol sales even when the date coincides with Buddhist holidays.

Haad Rin is crescent shaped beach located on the island of Ko Pha Ngan. It can be reached by boat from Koh Samui, an island off the coast of Southern Thailand.

Koh Samui is 293 miles (471 kilometres) south of Bangkok. Because the drive takes nearly 10 hours, air travel is recommended. The flight takes just over one hour. followed by a short ferry ride to the island.

National Children’s Day – 10 January 2026

Children’s Day is celebrated throughout Thailand with a host of events designed to delight and inspire young minds.

Special activities are held in parks, shopping malls, museums, government offices, and military bases, where children can enjoy games, performances, and interactive exhibits.

Many venues offer free entry, gifts, and treats, making it a joyful occasion for families.

The day also emphasizes the importance of children in shaping the nation’s future, with the Prime Minister traditionally delivering a message to encourage and uplift the younger generation.

National Teachers Day – 16 January 2026

National Teachers Day in Thailand is a time for students to show respect and gratitude to their educators through ceremonies, flower offerings, and heartfelt tributes.

Teacher’s Day is largely a private and school-based event, reflecting the deep cultural value placed on teachers as moral guides and pillars of society.

However, it is not an official holiday, and there are few public celebrations.


Bo Sang Umbrella Festival –  16 to 18 January 2026

Every January, the village of Bo Sang near Chiang Mai transforms into a vibrant celebration of Thai craftsmanship during the Bo Sang Umbrella & Sankampang Handicrafts Festival.

During the three-day festival, you can admire hand-made umbrellas, fans, and lanterns, enjoy parades and cultural performances, and experience the magic of illuminated umbrellas glowing in the evening air.

As the sun sets, the village takes on a magical glow. Hundreds of vibrantly painted umbrellas are illuminated, creating a dreamlike canopy above the streets. The atmosphere is festive and warm, with music, laughter, and the scent of street food filling the air.

Wai Sa Phaya Mengrai – 26 January 2026

The Wai Sa Phaya Mengrai Festival pays tribute to Phokhun Mengrai Maharat, the revered founder of Chiang Rai and the ancient Lanna Kingdom.

Held annually from late January to early February—typically between January 26 and February 4—the festival celebrates the city’s royal heritage with vibrant parades, traditional dance performances, beauty pageants, and cultural showcases

Locals gather at key landmarks, including the King Mengrai Monument, to honor his legacy through ceremonies and community festivities that blend history with heartfelt pride.

January in Thailand: Final Thoughts

When all is said and done, January can be one of the best months to visit Thailand. After all,  it is the coolest month, the driest month, and the sunniest month. Just keep in mind that it is also one of the most popular times to visit Thailand, so hotels are less likely to offer discounts and popular tourist attractions can be crowded.
