Sightseeing in Northern Sweden
The Vasterbottens Museum comprises two parts: the Gammlia Open-Air Museum, which is open in the warmer months, and an indoor museum, which is open year round.
The open-air museum is scattered across a vast wooded area and dates back to 1921, when the first building was reconstructed at the site.
Over the decades, buildings from across Sweden have been disassembled and reconstructed at the site one by one.
There is a traditional one-room schoolhouse, a Sami settlement, an imposing manor house, a farmhouse where bread is baked – the list goes on.
Some of the buildings are grand, and some are modest in scale.

Employees are dressed in traditional costumes and give fascinating accounts of the exhibitions they populate.
They are more than happy to pose with visitors for photos.
The indoor museum was added in 1943. Designed by renowned Swedish architect Bengt Romare, it houses photography, exhibitions, and various other representations of Sweden’s rich cultural heritage.
I was in Stockholm, Sweden, to attend TBEX Europe, a professional development and networking conference for travel bloggers and industry professionals.
After the conference ended, travel bloggers were offered the opportunity to make overnight trips to other parts of Sweden. I signed up for a four day, three night country break in Vasterbotten in Northern Sweden.
Our visit included a night a a farm,
Because of its interactive nature and the storytelling ability of its docents, the museum would be perfect for families with small children.
Even as an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the museum. I could easily have spent a few hours there.
But alas, a mouth-watering lunch awaited in Downtown Umea – with a walk through the city to follow.
Special thanks to our charming hosts Sirpa Karki and Hanna Sondell at #VisitUmea and #VisitVasterbotten as well as all of the guides and others that made our trip to Northern Sweden so special.
