Detroit Red Wings Team History

The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team in the United States. The team plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Detroit Red Wings were founded in 1926. They were one of the six original teams in the NHL. In fact, the original professional ice hockey teams included …
- Boston Bruins
- Chicago Blackhawks
- Detroit Red Wings
- Montreal Canadiens
- New York Rangers
- Toronto Maple Leafs
The NHL first expanded in 1967, when it doubled the number of teams, bringing the total to 12. And further expansions have brought the total number of hockey teams to 32. In fact, there are now 7 teams in Canada. And there are 25 teams in the United States.
The team first called itself the Detroit Cougars (left). In 1930, it changed its name to Detroit Falcons (right).
Two years later, the legendary ice hockey team changed its name to Detroit Red Wings. And they have been known as the Detroit Red Wings ever since.

The Detroit Red Wings have a stellar record. In fact, they have won 11 Stanley Cup championships.
And that is more than any other American team in the NHL. Certainly, they are one of the most popular professional ice hockey teams in the United States.

No wonder sports fans call Detroit “Hockeytown”!
However, two of the NHL’s Canadian teams have won more Stanley Cups than Detroit.
In fact, the Montreal Canadiens have won 24 NHL championships. And the Toronto Maple Leafs have won 13.
Nevertheless, the Detroit Red Wings have won four Stanley Cups since the Canadiens’ last championship in 1993.And the last time the Maple Leafs won a championship was in 1967!

The Detroit Red Wings play home games at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
The arena sits at the heart of The Detroit District, a mixed use development for sports and entertainment.
The multi-purpose venue opened in 2017. In addition to the Detroit Red Wings, the facility hosts the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
