Hong Kong: Argentinian Steak House Opens in the Heart of Central

Food and Beverage

Hong Kong media get a sneak preview of Gaucho the night before the Argentinean eatery’s Grand Opening. The steak house focuses on ceviches, empanadas, and Angus beef. It has an all-Argentine wine list.

Upwards of 100 food critics, travel writers, and other journalists were invited to Gaucho on Tuesday 21 October 2014 to network learn about wine, sample grilled meats, and savour the Argentinian eatery’s fine wines.

We were served some yummy snacks, including ceviches. My favourite was the Ecuadorian ceviche, which was made of shrimp, roasted tomato and pepper sauce, onion, and coriander.

Served in Chinese style porcelain spoons (so much easier to handle than a little plate, when you’re holding a wine glass in the other hand), it had just the right balance of taste and texture.

I just wish that I could have gotten my mitts on a few more spoonfuls! It proved so popular with attendees that I never got a second helping! Servers quickly ran out as soon as they emerged from the kitchen.

Nuevo Latino Tastes

In addition to South American ceviches, the Nuevo Latino menu focuses on empanadas and 4 cuts of 100% grass fed, free-range Argentine Angus Beef – rump, sirloin, rib-eye, and fillet.

The restaurant’s signature Beef Board, which changes daily, was on display, with chefs offering a short course on the finer points of Argentinian beef.

The restaurant also serves several classic Argentinian dishes, including a Gaucho Burger, Salt Baked Corn Fed Chicken, Grilled Rack of Lamb, the list goes on.

“Provenance is everything at Gaucho,” says Executive Chef Fernando Trocca.

“We source our meat and many of our ingredients from Argentina because we won’t compromise on the authenticity of the experience.”

Argentina is the world’s 5th largest producer of wine, and all wines at the Argentine steak house are from Argentina, which is fine by me.

I really hate businesses that try to be all things to all people. There is something to be said for specialisation. I like restaurants with a clear theme that is carried through to the max.

Stylish Decor

The decor is decidedly masculine, with cow hide walls, black and white leather furniture, mirrored panels, sleek crystal chandeliers, white and grey marble floors, and lots of chrome.

There is also a cozy lounge with vintage cocktails, the sounds of tango, and chic decor.

Hong Kong is the restaurant chain’s first outlet in Asia, but I doubt it will be the last.

Based in London, Gaucho has outlets throughout the UK as well as in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It even has one in Buenos Aires, Argentina – talk about taking coals to Newcastle!

Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Where

Gaucho, 5th Floor, LHT Tower, 31 Queen’s Road, Central, Hong Kong.

The restaurant is located just steps from the Central MTR station across the alley from Albercrombie and Fitch. It is a short walk from Lan Kwai Fong, SoHo, and the Mid-Levels escalator.

The restaurant is a short taxi ride from Admiralty, North Point, Happy Valley, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Causeway Bay, Western, Sheung Wan, and other points on Hong Kong Island.
