Oilers Team History

The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team in Canada. And the Oilers compete in the Pacific  Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Oilers were established in 1972. Originally, they called themselves the Alberta Oilers. And they played in the World Hockey Association (WHA).

The following year, they changed their name to the Edmonton Oilers. And in 1979, they moved to the NHL.

In fact, the Oilers were one of four WHA franchises that moved to the NHL when it absorbed the WHA that year.

The Edmonton Oilers have won seven division  championships. In addition, they have won two Presidents’ Trophies and seven conference championships.

Most importantly, they have won the Stanley Cup five times. But the last time they won it was in the 1989-90 season.

The Edmonton Oilers are one of two NHL teams based in Alberta. In addition, the Calgary Flames are based in Calgary. And the Oilers and Flames are arch-rivals.

In addition to the  Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League play home games at the arena.

The Western Hockey League is a major junior ice hockey league with 17 teams in Western Canada. In addition, it has five teams the Northwestern United States.

To clarify,  it is one of three leagues that comprise the Canadian Hockey League.

Rogers Place is a multi-use arena. In addition to ice hockey, it also hosts concerts. And it opened in 2016.
