The Lakers: A Global Sensation

Few teams in professional sports have transcended their local roots the way the Los Angeles Lakers have. From their Showtime era in the 1980s to the Kobe Bryant dynasty and now the LeBron James era, the Lakers have consistently combined star power, championships, and Hollywood glamour. This unique blend has made them not just a basketball team, but a cultural export.
Star Power Across Eras
From Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul‑Jabbar to Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James, the Lakers have always been defined by generational icons. Each era brought players whose appeal reached far beyond the court, turning the franchise into a showcase of basketball greatness.
Winning Tradition
With one of the highest championship totals in NBA history, the Lakers became synonymous with success. Fans around the world gravitated toward the purple and gold not only for the star power, but also for the expectation of victory and the culture of excellence that followed the team.
Hollywood Connection
Playing in Los Angeles, the heart of the film and entertainment industry, gave the Lakers a spotlight that amplified their brand globally. Their proximity to Hollywood meant games weren’t just sporting events — they became cultural spectacles, with celebrities courtside and the team woven into the fabric of global pop culture.
International Influence
As the NBA expanded its reach through overseas exhibition games, satellite broadcasts, and later digital streaming, the Lakers were often the face of the league abroad. Their games were among the first to be televised internationally, their merchandise became global best‑sellers, and their brand helped anchor the NBA’s growth in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. This international visibility ensured that Lakers fandom spread far beyond Los Angeles.
Lakers Team History
Many fans will be surprised to learn that the Lakers were not originally based in Los Angeles. In fact, the franchise was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1947, one year after the National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed.
In the early years, the Lakers competed in the NBA’s Western Division and quickly established themselves as a powerhouse, winning five championships in Minneapolis led by George Mikan — the dominant center of his era and widely regarded as the NBA’s first superstar.
The team was nicknamed the Lakers because Minnesota is known for its many lakes. In fact, the state’s nickname is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. When the franchise moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1960, it became the Los Angeles Lakers.
So why didn’t they change the team’s name to something that was more locally relevant? After all, Los Angeles is not famous for its lakes!Perhaps, it was because of the catchy alliteration — Los Angeles Lakers — that the name wasn’t changed. But it also carried the weight of the team’s early success in Minneapolis.
Since moving to Los Angeles, the Lakers have competed in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, establishing themselves as the flagship team of the West.
If the Lakers were successful in Minneapolis, they have continued that tradition in Los Angeles. In total, the franchise has won 23 division titles, 31 conference titles, and 16 NBA championships — five in Minneapolis and 11 more after relocating to Los Angeles.
The Lakers are one of two NBA teams based in Los Angeles. Likewise, the Los Angeles Clippers also call the City of Angels home.
Other professional sports teams based in Greater Los Angeles include two football teams, two baseball teams, and two ice hockey teams.
For example, the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers play in the National Football League (NFL).
Secondly, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim play in Major League Baseball (MLB).
Finally, the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks play in the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Los Angeles Lakers play home games at Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles. It was originally called Staples Center. It was renamed Crypto.com Arena in 2021.
In addition to the Lakers, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Los Angeles Kings, and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) also play home games at the arena.
Located in downtown Los Angeles, the multi-purpose arena sits next to the Los Angeles Convention Center. The multi-use facility opened in 1999.

A Word to the Wise

These venues tend to attract Los Angeles Lakers fans on game day. However, some venues can be fickle.
Sometimes they won’t turn on the sound. Other times they might show other events. And there is always the chance the venue might be booked for special events.
Also, fans sometimes migrate to other venues. And bars sometimes close.
Therefore, you should always call ahead to make sure that the game you want to watch will be broadcast.
