The Yankees were established in 1901. But they were not founded in New York City. In fact, they based themselves in Baltimore, Maryland. And they originally called themselves the  Baltimore Orioles.

To clarify, they had no relationship to the present-day Baltimore Orioles

Then in 1903, the team moved to the Big Apple. And it renamed itself the New York Highlanders. Officially, they changed their name to the New York Yankees a decade later in 1913.

Most Successful Franchise in History?

The Yankees have won 19 American East Division titles. And they have won 40 AL pennants.  Most importantly, the Yanks have won the World Series 27 times.

Are the New York Yankees the most successful franchise in the history of major league sports?

In fact, the Pinstripers have won more titles than any other team in the four major sports leagues.
